Project Description

Bosnia and Herzegovina has great renewable energy potential. Currently, only 40% of Bosnia and Herzegovina's economically and environmentally feasible hydropower potential has been developed.

This project aims to increase the production of energy from renewable resources by constructing a hydropower plant (HPP) at Babino Selo. The new plant is expected to produce 58.9 GWh/year and thus contribute to the replacement of older and less efficient thermal facilities. The WBIF has allocated a €750,000 grant for the preparation of the feasibility study and the associated designs and environmental impact assessment. The study was completed in June 2016.

Results and Benefits

  • increase of renewable energy sources ratio in electricity generation having in mind the current state and capacities of hydro potential
  • decrease of the environmental impacts by using fossil fuels – contribution to reducing the emission of greenhouse gases, exploitation of hydro-potential
  • securing long-term electricity supply
  • approaching Kyoto Protocol targets
  • more efficient energy use
