Project Description

Bar-Vrbnica is the main railway line of Montenegro’s rail network, carrying around 20% of passenger volume and 60% of freight. The line was constructed as part of the railway corridor to Belgrade and opened to traffic in 1976.

This WBIF technical assistance grant finances the preparation of a Feasibility Study, Environmental and Social Impact Assessment, Preliminary Design and Tender Documents for the rehabilitation of power supply facilities and video surveillance along the Bar - Vrbnica railway line.

The scope of work for the Power Supply system includes:

  • The Electric Traction Substation at Mojkovac,
  • Eight (8) sectioning plants at Bijelo Polje, Mijatovo Kolo, Trebaljevo, Kolašin, Kos, Lutovo Bratonožići and Bioče.
  • New buildings for the power supply facilities

The scope of work for the Video Surveillance system on the section from Bijelo Polje to Bar includes:

  • Six railway stations: Bijelo Polje, Mojkovac, Kolašin, Podgorica, Sutomore, and Bar;
  • Ten level crossings: Zagoric, Cijevna, Balijača, Vukovci, Moraca, Bistrica, Virpazar, Žukotrlica, Šušanj, and Macedonian settlement;
  • Five bridges: Mala Rijeka, Tara 3, Trebaljevo, Ljubovid, and Tanki rt;
  • Sixteen critical locations on the railway: 12 sections of the line ranging between 100 m and 1 km in length, and the entrances/exits to four tunnels.

The main objectives of the investments, in combination with others along the same line, are to increase security through the higher-quality supply of electric power of the electrical system, reduce operation and maintenance costs of power distribution due to the smaller number of defects, improve safety and the security of people and goods in the transportation sectors, increase energy efficiency, and provide environmental and economic benefits by reducing electricity losses.
