Intensive works on the construction of Kostolac wind farm with the installation of new turbines are underway, and should be completed by mid-2025. This will supply energy to 45,000 households in Serbia.

Ambassadors of the European Union and the Federal Republic of Germany, Emanuele Giaufret and Anke Konrad, and Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović Handanović, visited the works on 5 December. This is the first wind farm of the company Elektroprivreda Srbije, which, with a capacity of 66 MW, will further increase the security of electricity supply and advance decarbonisation agenda. Twenty wind turbines are planned for four settlements around Kostolac, producing 187 GWh power annually and helping avoid 174,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

“The wind farm is part of Serbia’s efforts to produce, like other European countries, more clean energy for its citizens and economy and to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. By the end of the decade, almost every second megawatt-hour of electricity will be generated from renewables, which is an indication that we have launched an unstoppable process of energy transition”, said Minister Đedović Handanović.

The investment is worth €145 million and funded by a €30 million EU grant via the Western Balkans Investment Framework, and German development cooperation through a KfW loan (€80 million) and a grant (€1.8 million). The company Elektroprivrede Srbije also contributes €32 million.

The Ambassador of the European Union, Emanuele Giaufret, stated that Kostolac wind farm is a significant achievement in the energy transition of Serbia and a testimony to strong partnership between Serbia and the European Union.

“This project, aligned with the EU Green Agenda for the Western Balkans, represents a concrete step towards decarbonisation and sustainable energy development. By using wind energy, Serbia is not only reducing its dependence on fossil fuels, but also advancing its climate commitments and ensuring a cleaner future for its citizens”, said Giaufret.

The project will significantly contribute to the diversification of the country's energy mix by increasing renewable energy generation from a cost-effective domestic resource. This will further enable economic growth, while reducing the reliance on fossil fuels, cleaning-up and re-purposing the exhausted open-cast mining sites in the Kostolac Coal Basin.
