This project concerns the construction of 70 physical education facilities and the rehabilitation of more than 60 primary and secondary schools throughout North Macedonia. Initiated in 2009 as part of a larger programme of the Ministry of Education and Science, the project aims to improve the performance of students in school subjects, strengthen their health condition, increase enrolment rates and foster inclusive socio-economic development by offering a better learning environment, including physical education.
The project benefited from two WBIF investment grants which have been made available by WBIF Bilateral Donors’ contributions to the Framework, as well as from two loans totalling €42.5 million granted by the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB). The WBIF grant support has enabled the refurbishment of ten primary and six secondary schools. The interventions vary from roof, windows, and floor replacement to the reconstruction of sanitary facilities, removal of roof asbestos, and general repairs of the heating and electrical systems.
