Project Description

With large parts of the EU waste acquis yet to be transposed and only six landfills meeting EU standards, the construction of regional sanitary landfills has been identified as a prerequisite of a systematic solution for solid waste management in the country.

The WBIF finances the supervision services for the construction of a regional sanitary landfill of 1,269,340 m3 for three municipalities in Tuzla Canton (Zivinice, Banovici, and Kladanj), a safer system of waste management with integrated recycling. The investment is expected to help bring current operations closer to the EU standards, and reduce the environmental risks posed by uncontrolled emissions and effluents from existing open dump sites.

Construction works are planned to start in 2018 and be completed in 2021.
