Construction of OHL 400kV North Macedonia - Serbia

Construction of OHL 400kV North Macedonia - Serbia

Project Description

This investment has supported the construction of a 400 kV overhead line (OHL) from the Stip Substation in centre-east of North Macedonia to the northern border with Serbia. WBIF has allocated a grant for the preparation of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to meet the requirements of national, World Bank and EU regulations. The EIA was of particular importance for North Macedonia, as it was the first of its kind in the country that allowed relevant permits and authorisations to be obtained.

The EIA examined a number of route options for the 70km-long corridor between Stip and Kumanovo, and assessed factors such as noise, electromagnetic radiation, geology, flora and fauna, cultural heritage, and other impacts of the line. During the EIA preparation, 16 individual mitigation measures were identified to reduce the impact of the investment on flora and fauna, as well as other measures relating to the preservation of natural heritage and avoidance of sensitive areas.
