Project Preparation Feasibility Studies for Wastewater Treatment Plants in Kosovo

Project Preparation Feasibility Studies for Wastewater Treatment Plants in Kosovo

Project Description

This WBIF technical assistance grant has financed the preparation of feasibility studies for wastewater treatment plants in seven major cities in Kosovo*: Pristina, Mitrovica, Prizren, Gjakova, Peja, Ferizaj, and Gjilan. The purpose of feasibility studies was to examine operating cycles of water utilities, support the preparation of long-term strategic investment plans for water supply and wastewater collection and treatment, and identify priority investment programmes that are cost-effective and sustainable in terms of technical, financial, economic and environmental criteria, and compliant with national and EU standards for water supply and wastewater.

The benefits of constructing the wastewater collection and treatment system in these seven cities are expected to be considerable: directly for those inhabitants serviced by new facilities, those living downstream in Kosovo and neighbouring countries, as well as inhabitants and visitors to coastal resorts where polluted rivers meet the sea. Significant benefits will accrue to business growth across many sectors and social well-being from improved health and a better environment.
