Albania, Flood Protection Infrastructure on Erzen-Ishem, Shkumbin, Seman and Vjosa Rivers: Feasibility Study, ESIA

Project Description

Albania’s rivers have been particularly prone to flood risk that affects over 110,000 hectares of agricultural land. The largest floods have been concentrated in the low western area of the country, where the rivers diffuse into the sea. Consequently, the existing dikes and the riverbanks on both sides of the rivers were inundated and overflown.

In order to mitigate and prevent the negative impact of flooding, Albania has initiated investments to increase the level of flood protection management and prevent damages to human health, flora, fauna and the economy. Specifically, investments entail the construction/rehabilitation of longitudinal embankments, weirs and cross panels along rivers Erzen-Ishem, Shkumbin, Seman and Vjosa.

To support these efforts, WBIF has financed the preparation of the Feasibility Study and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the rehabilitation of flood protection infrastructure (flood embankments) along the rivers and the preparation of short-term and long-term plans for the implementation of infrastructural measures.
