Montenegro, Niksic Wastewater Management System, Sewerage Network Phase 2: Feasibility Study and Cost-Benefit Analysis, Detailed Design with E(S)IA, Tender Documents

Project Description

Nikšić is the second largest city in Montenegro located in the central region of the country with a total population of 56,970. It is the centre of Nikšić Municipality with a population of 72,443 citizens, which is the largest municipality by area and the second most inhabited after Podgorica.

In order to improve the living conditions of citizens and protect the river Zeta as part of the Adriatic basin, a new wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was constructed with the support of the European Union and the European Investment Bank (EIB). In parallel, as part of Phase 1 of the sewerage network construction, 17.2 km of primary collectors, 2.2 km of secondary collectors, three pump stations and 2.2 km of pressure pipelines were constructed.

According to data from “Vodovod” Nikšić, approximately 50% of the full capacity of the new WWTP is currently in use. Implementation of Phase II of the sewerage network construction will provide better operation of the WWTP in order to reach the designed capacity and provide maximum protection of the recipients and groundwater in accordance with the relevant EU directives, national legislation and regulations.

Phase II will encompass the construction of a sewerage network with a total length of 35 km for four settlements on the right bank of the Bistrica River: Ostrovac, Dragova Luka, Cemenca and Rubeza. Wastewater from these settlements will be collected by the main collector and, together with the wastewater from the Rastoci settlement, returned to the central system and taken to a treatment plant.

For the purposes of Phase 2 implementation, WBIF allocated a grant in mid-2022 for the preparation of a new Feasibility study with Cost-Benefit Analysis, Detailed Design, Environmental and (Social) Impact Assessment, and tender documentation for works and supervision of works.
