Support to the Construction of a Maximum Security State Prison

Support to the Construction of a Maximum Security State Prison

Project Description

The first state-level prison in Bosnia and Herzegovina with a maximum-security capacity of 348 places, of which 298 for prisoners and 50 for detainees, was constructed to relieve the capacities of the entity prison capacities, alleviate the overbooked prison system, and contribute to better re-socialisation of inmates.

WBIF provided comprehensive technical assistance to the Ministry of Justice of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its Project Implementation Unit (PIU) responsible for the delivery of the investment. The support included the delivery of tender documentation necessary for construction works and supervision of works, as well as interest rate subsidies.

The development of the new prison facility primarily has brought social benefits, as it has provided adequate imprisonment and detainment facilities for male inmates. The investment has also contributed to the BiH's legal approximation with the EU Acquis and international human rights standards in this area.
