Energy Efficiency

The Western Balkans are still handling the transition of their energy sectors towards open and regionally integrated energy markets. They must at the same time start decarbonising their energy sector. Large untapped potential for both energy efficiency and renewable energy in the region are key assets in the process. They can bring direct economic benefit, as well as address energy security, import dependency, and climate and health concerns. Raising awareness of the benefits of energy efficiency and encouraging reform to support investment in energy efficiency and renewable energy are essential to harvest this potential.

The WBIF is a key source of finance for infrastructure project preparation and implementation in the region. The WBIF energy efficiency projects are financed under the priority investment flagships of the Economic and Investment Plan for the Western Balkans: Flagship 6 - Renovation wave. So far, the WBIF has provided €91 million in grant funding for 8 energy efficiency projects worth €840 million. The Regional Energy Efficiency Programme for the Western Balkans (REEP and REEP Plus) has the largest share of the portfolio.
