Trans-Balkan Electricity Corridor: Obrenovac – Bajina Bašta Grid Section in Serbia

Trans-Balkan Electricity Corridor: Obrenovac – Bajina Bašta Grid Section in Serbia

Project Description

Project

This project concerns the construction of a 109 km double-circuit 400 kV overhead transmission line between Obrenovac and Bajina Bašta in Serbia, along with the upgrade of the Obrenovac and Bajina Bašta substations to 400 kV. The investment forms part of the Trans-Balkan Electricity Corridor, a strategic initiative linking electricity networks across the Western Balkans.

It aims to enhance regional electricity connectivity, strengthen system stability and reliability, and support cross-border electricity trade. The project contributes to more secure power flows, reduced transmission losses, and improved integration of renewable energy sources into the regional electricity market.

Action

The Action supported by the WBIF grant covers:

Preparation of project documentation, including pre-feasibility study, feasibility study, environmental and social impact assessment, and technical design;

Construction of a 109 km double-circuit 400 kV overhead transmission line between Obrenovac and Bajina Bašta;

Upgrading the Obrenovac and Bajina Bašta substations to 400 kV;

Installation of two new 400 kV line bays and associated equipment at Obrenovac substation;

Integration of the new line into the existing transmission network in line with technical and safety standards.

These actions will improve voltage stability, increase transmission reliability, and enable efficient electricity exchanges between Serbia and neighbouring countries. The investment also strengthens regional cooperation and supports renewable energy deployment.

Context and Relevance

The project is part of the Trans-Balkan Electricity Corridor, an EU-supported initiative that promotes interconnection between the electricity transmission systems of Italy, Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro, Romania, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The project is co-financed by the European Union through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) under the Economic Investment Plan Flagship 5 – Transition from Coal.
